Doctorates

Current Information

Doctoral defenses will take place as a face-to-face event in compliance with the 3G rule in the winter semester 2021/22. Regardless of the size of the group, only people who have been vaccinated against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, tested negative or have recovered, are allowed to take part in these events.

All participants in the defense of the doctorate are obliged to register for the event using the QR code and the "Löwen-App" when they enter the room. By registering, the participant also declares that the requirements of the 3G rule have been personally met.

The participants must wear a medical face mask if a minimum distance of 1.50 m cannot be maintained during the event.

The defense can be broadcast to an interested audience via video conference (via WebEx, MLUconf, etc.).

The head of the examination committee is responsible for carrying out the defense of the doctorate.

Important notes

To conclude doctorate processes the "Fakultätsrat" of the Faculty of Natural Sciences 1 - Biosciences decided:

Criteria for writing cumulative dissertations

Cumulative dissertations must be based on three or more accepted publications, of which two of the publications identify the doctoral candidate as the first author and at least one further publication with an own share greater than or equal to 30%. This decision will come into effect at the beginning of the winter semester 2021/2022.

Number of reviews to be obtained in the doctoral procedure

The number of reviews according to §9 of the doctoral regulations of the Faculty of Natural Sciences I of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg was set at three (3) by the "Fakultätsrat".

Awarding of a predicate

The "Fakultätsrat" (faculty committee) recommends that the doctoral committee and the chairman of the doctoral committee only award the grade "summa cum laude" with a grade of 1.0.

summa cum laude: In the case of outstanding academic achievements (if, as a rule, all reviews, the lecture and the discussion are rated 1.0), the dissertation is rated "summa cum laude".

Publication of dissertations - personal details

At the request of the doctoral candidate to the doctoral committee, the publication of the date of birth, the place of birth, personal information and the academic career in the dissertation can be dispensed with.

Publication of dissertations

The doctoral committee determines whether the reviewers propose conditions for the publication of the dissertation. If this is the case, then the doctoral committee makes a proposal to the doctoral committee as to whether and to what extent these conditions should be resolved. The corresponding proposal is recorded in the doctoral file.
If the requirements are proposed by an internal reviewer, the doctoral committee commissions this person to check that the requirements have been met. If the requirements are proposed by an external reviewer, then the doctoral committee would instruct the chairperson of the doctoral committee to check that the requirements have been met.

The "Fakultätsrat" (faculty comitte) recommends choosing the form of a corrigendum.

Publication notes

At the end of the doctoral procedure, the applicant must publish the dissertation in accordance with § 14 of the doctoral regulations. For the electronic publication of a work on the Internet, a contract is concluded between the author and the ULB.

You could find all information on electronic publication at the University and State Library (ULB) at:
