Faculty locations
Weinberg Campus
Most of the teaching buildings and research facilities of the Fa - culty of Natural Sciences 1 - Biosciences are concentrated on the Weinberg Campus in Halle/Saale. In the immediate vicinity are the two other Natural Science Faculties of the University as well as nationwide important research institutes such as the Leibniz Institute for Plant Biochemistry (IPB), the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research GmbH (UFZ), the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics, the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Development in Transformation Economies (IAMO), the Fraunho - fer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems (IMWS), the Fraunhofer Center for Silicon Photovoltaics (CSP) and others. Furthermore, over 100 companies and start-ups from the life sciences and material sciences sector are located here, as is the university‘s transfer and start-up service.
Am Kirchtor 1
Am Kirchtor 1
The building of the Institute of Geobotany on the grounds of the Botanical Garden dates from the 1840s and is therefore one of the oldest institute buildings of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
Biologicum (Weinbergweg 10)
Biologicum
The Biologicum on Weinbergweg was built in the years 1998-2000 and houses the departments of genetics, plant physiology and didactics of biology as well as the biology examination office.
Biologicum - Greenhouse
The greenhouse behind the Biologicum.
Biozentrum (Weinbergweg 22)
Biozentrum
The Biozentrum, which was completed in 1998, is used by university and non-university scientific institutions as well as by companies in the biotech sector. The building includes a working group from pharmacy and the student advisory service of the English-language master’s course in Pharmaceutical and Industrial Biotechnology.
Botanical Garden
Botanical Garden
The botanical garden in the north of the city center was one of the first in Prussia to be created in 1698 and has been expanded over the centuries to its current size of around 4.5 hectares. Around 12,000 plant species grow here outdoors and in various greenhouses. Particularly striking buildings are the historical observatory built in 1788, the tropical house and the Victoria house.
Charles Tanford Protein Center (CTP)
Charles Tanford Protein Center
In this research building, inaugurated in 2018, interdisciplinary work is carried out on protein research. The Charles Tanford Protein Center (CTP) is home to research groups from biochemistry and pharmacy, chemists and physicians as well as the interdisciplinary center for innovation competence ZIK HALOmem.
Große Steinstraße 79/80
Große Steinstraße 79/80
During the renovation of the historical institute building at the botanical garden, two working groups of geobotany are temporarily housed in this office building in the city center.

The herbarium of the university was founded in 1812 and today includes around 600,000 specimens of higher and lower plants and fungi from all over the world.
Hoher Weg 8
Hoher Weg 8
Working groups for pharmaceutical biology and zoology are located in this building.
Institute of Pharmacy (Wolfgang-Langenbeck-Straße 4)
Institute of Pharmacy
The pharmacy building from the 1960s is currently being extensively renovated. The pharmacy working groups that are normally based here are temporarily housed in the former building of the Institute of Biochemistry at Kurt-Mothes-Straße 3.
Institute of Pharmacy
The side wing of the pharmacy building, which connects the main building with the Institute of Chemistry, was already modernized in the 1990s.
Kurt-Mothes-Straße 3
Kurt-Mothes-Str. 3
This building was erected in the late 1980s as an institute building for biochemistry. After most of the biochemistry working groups moved to the newly built Charles Tanford Protein Center, the building at Kurt-Mothes-Strasse 3 still houses two microbiology working groups and the biochemistry examination office. Furthermore, the building is used by several pharmacy working groups, the Pharmacy Examination Office and the Dean's Office during the renovation of the Institute of Pharmacy.
Kurt-Mothes-Straße 3
In this modern laboratory building, research groups of biochemistry and pharmacy conduct their research.
Technologie- und Gründerzentrum (TGZ III, Heinrich-Damerow-Straße 4)
Technologie- und Gründerzentrum (TGZ III)
In addition to institutions and companies specializing in biotechnology, nanotechnology and materials science, this modern research building also houses working groups of pharmacy and biology.
Zoological Collection - Zoologische Sammlung (Domplatz 4)
Zoological Collection at Domplatz 4
The former medical clinic on Domplatz in downtown Halle/Saale, built in 1839, was converted into the Zoological Institute in 1883-1887. Today the building houses the University's Zoological Collection, which includes over 2 million objects.
